Bev Butler
January 25, 2012 - 9:58amBev Butler, whose funeral was on Monday at St Raphael's church on New Street, was a longstanding member of both the Federal and Provincial Liberal parties, and one of our most dedicated volunteers during at least three decades. The first campaign that he took a leading role in in Burlington was in 1988, when he campaigned in the federal election for James Smith. He then worked for the campaigns of Paddy Torsney, as well as every provincial campaign. During those years he filled numerous roles on the executives of the BPLA and BFLA , including vice-president of the BPLA, the resident technology and database expert at every election, and most recently he chaired the election readiness committees for the BFLA and BPLA.

More than 300,000 undergraduate students are eligible to receive the new grant this year – saving families $1,600 for each student in university and $730 for each student in college.
Karmel Sakran and Alyssa Brierley deliver donations to PW Food Bank
December 18, 2011 - 11:25amYesterday Karmel Sakran and Alyssa Brierley, our candidates in the Provincial and Federal elections last year, delivered the food collected at the recent BPLA/BFLA Christmas party to the Partnership Food Bank on Plains Road East, Burlington. The PW Food Bank does incredible work. It serves 7500 people in our community, as well as providing food for 3000 meals that Wellington Square Church provides each year. Each eligible food bank recipient receives $140 of groceries every 3 weeks.
Volunteer Cass Quinn gave Karmel and Alyssa a tour of the facility and told them about the challenges they face - above all the drop in donations during the summer months. As a result the BPLA and BFLA will be looking at organising another food drive in the spring.
